This was the question sent to me and I herewith supply an answer.
Genesis 6:1-2 “1And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, 2That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose”
In Hebrew 1, we are told; “5For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son? 6And again, when he bringeth in the first begotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him. 7And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire”
Evidently from the above scriptures, God doesn’t refer to Angels as sons, but servant and messengers in most cases.
In Genesis 1:11, we read “And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.”
So, if every seed must bring forth its own kind, then of course, God can only bring forth His own kind as sons and not angels. Therefore, it is said;
Genesis 1:27 “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them”
So, when we read of the “sons of God” we should be referring to a people in the image of God and not angelic spirit.
So, we are told;
Luke 3:38 “Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God”
Adam was referred to as “a son of God”. Adam, a being after God’s image and likeness was the son of God just as Jesus is the son of God and you too born of the Spirit are sons of God (1 John 3:1).
So now who were these sons of God in Genesis 6? Were they angels or humans?
“The sons of God” = Speaks of those who are professors of the faith who in this case was the lineage of Seth, the righteous people who actually call upon the name of the Lord, but here got married to the daughters of men.
Who were these daughters of men?
These were those that were profane, and strangers to God and godliness. The very lineage of Cain if you will. Meaning here that the posterity of Seth did not keep to themselves, as they ought to have done, both for preservation of their own purity, and the hatred for apostasy, they intermingled themselves with the excommunicated race of Cain. The righteous lineage of Seth took them wives of all that they chose from Cain’s lineage.
God personally told Israel what they must not do;
Deuteronomy 7 “1When the LORD thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and hath cast out many nations before thee, the Hittites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than thou; 2And when the LORD thy God shall deliver them before thee; thou shalt smite them, and utterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor shew mercy unto them: 3Neither shalt thou make marriages with them; thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son. 4For they will turn away thy son from following me, that they may serve other gods: so will the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and destroy thee suddenly”
This was what happened as we stated, Seth lineage got mixed up with the lineage of Cain by marriage and not angels coming to mate or marry with the daughters of men.
Why should we believe this and not as we have always been told? Simply because Angels were NOT created to mate or have sexual relationship for procreation.
Here this from Jesus’ mouth. We can believe Jesus, can’t we?
Mark 12 “18Then come unto him the Sadducees, which say there is no resurrection; and they asked him, saying, 19Master, Moses wrote unto us, If a man’s brother die, and leave his wife behind him, and leave no children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. 20Now there were seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and dying left no seed.
21And the second took her, and died, neither left he any seed: and the third likewise. 22And the seven had her, and left no seed: last of all the woman died also. 23In the resurrection therefore, when they shall rise, whose wife shall she be of them? for the seven had her to wife. 24And Jesus answering said unto them, Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither the power of God? 25For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels which are in heaven. 26And as touching the dead, that they rise: have ye not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spake unto him, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? 27He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living: ye therefore do greatly err”
Did you see that clearly in verse 25? Angels don’t marry or are given in marriage. Therefore, the story in Genesis 6 of the sons of God marrying the daughters of men has nothing to do with angels who fell by coming to marry women. That doesn’t align with divine purpose and scriptures.
Simply put, the sons of Seth violated one major scripture, 2 Corinthians 6:14 “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?”
In summary let me quote the words of John Wesley as it caught my attention
“The sons of God – those who were called by the name of the Lord, and called upon that name, married the daughters of men – those that were profane, and strangers to God. The posterity of Seth did not keep to themselves as they ought, but intermingled with the race of Cain: they took them wives of all that they chose – they chose only by the eye: they saw that they were fair -which was all they looked at”
That is the story of Genesis 6:1-2. Nothing to do with fallen angels. Let’s read our Bible well with understanding.
